Freedom. Such a sweet word for so many people. But freedom is something that has to be obtained, gained, and acquired. Freedom looks like walking hand in hand with Jesus. I was reading through John the other day and stumbled across verses 31-32 which read, "So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". I sat in disbelief that I had never come to terms and realized this before-
In order to obtain freedom, you must obtain a relationship with the Father.
Peace doesn't come to you from nowhere, it comes to you from someone, and thats Jesus. What that scripture is saying is that if you abide in His word, you follow Him as a disciple, then you will know the truth- and the truth will set you free. The truth that is being referred to here is the truth and His truth. The truth is who God is... the Messiah and our Savior. His truth is what the gospel portrays as God sending His one and only Son to take on the sins of the world and die in our place so we didnt have to bear the price of our sins in order to live in eternity with Him.
When it comes with gaining freedom, you are gaining salvation. Salvation to a believer looks like gaining your freedom from past sins and what you were expected to pay for your sins, death. What we get to gain as believers is freedom, we gain the right to live freely because Christ died on our behalf.
Jesus gave His life so that we could gain freedom.
What we have acquired is a lifetime bestfriend, Father, and never-ending love from the Father. That is something you can never get from any human here on earth or from anything the world has to offer you. But- you have to know what gaining the freedom that Jesus offers will cost you.
Gaining freedom means you in return, live your life to give glory to the one you received it from. When we look back at scripture, we see that we are called to be His disciples- so that we come to know who the truth is. Without walking alongside our Creator and having an intimate relationship weith Him, we will never be able to experience true freedom. To know someone, you must spend time with them and desire to get to know them, it’s a two-way street.
You must want to be set free, in order to be set free.
If you think you can self-satisfy and don’t need a Savior, you won’t seek the Savior.
If you are comfortable where you are and see no harm in living in your sin, there will be no motivation to find freedom.
It’s simple as that.
